Asking someone to listen to your music always feels like asking for a favour. There’s an awful lot of music out there, most of it made by people with bigger budgets, better hair and someone else taking care of the promotion. So I’ve tried to make this particular invitation as straightforward as possible: five songs, all in one Spotify playlist, ready whenever you are.

It’s called Five Songs, which should at least earn me a few points for an accurate title. It’s a short selection of my own music, giving you an easy way to explore what I write and record without being presented with an entire back catalogue and an implied obligation to clear your afternoon.

A Small Playlist That Will Keep Changing

The idea is to keep the playlist short but change the selection from time to time. There will still be five songs, but they won’t always be the same five. If you’ve listened before, it’s worth coming back to see what’s moved in.

I like the idea of giving a handful of songs a little space to be heard. When you’ve spent time writing something, recording the instruments and working towards a finished track, you hope it will get a chance to connect with somebody. A short playlist feels like a manageable invitation: come in, have a listen and see whether anything catches your ear.

You might discover a favourite, revisit something you’ve heard before or decide that one song deserves another play. That’s exactly what I’m hoping for.

Your Next Musical Discovery Doesn’t Have to Be Famous

One of the pleasures of streaming is being able to try music you might never encounter otherwise. Alongside the familiar albums and favourite artists, there’s room for a songwriter quietly making music and hoping it finds its people. In this instance, that songwriter is me, and I’m making a fairly unsubtle bid for a place in your listening.

Put Five Songs on while you make a coffee, potter about the house or take a break from whatever you were supposed to be doing. There’s no required listening posture, and I won’t be setting questions afterwards.

If a song connects with you, save it to your own library or add it to a playlist. If you know someone who might enjoy it, send them the link. Those small actions help give independent music another opportunity to be heard, and they mean a great deal to the person who made it.
