I picked one of Joni Mitchell’s songs River in my Top 10 Songs. River is from Blue which very nearly made this list but in the end I chose Hejira because it’s such a brilliant album and it demands your attention.

Driven by Joni’s unusual guitar tunings and Jaco Pastorius’ amazing bass lines Hejira is an absolute gem of an album. There isn’t an obvious hit single anywhere to be found and it will take repeated listens to fully appreciate individual songs but stick with it because it’s worth it.

I just love the way these songs blend together, the way they twist and turn folding in and around each other. Hejira is a work of genius.
