If you’re a songwriter or musician and you’ve ever uploaded a song to any of the streaming services, or posted on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or any social media network then you will have received ‘offers’ from probably dozens of kind hearted souls. Offers like the promise of making your music the next big thing, millions of plays on services like Spotify, more followers than you can possibly imagine and on and on.
In fact, according to these people, it’s a miracle that everybody in the world is not already an international superstar wallowing in cash up to their eyeballs.
Of course they’re scamming. There’s no such path to riches and fame. The reality is that your chances of ‘making it’ are worse than winning the national lottery every week.
There are some 60,000 new songs uploaded to Spotify every day. That’s every day. Unless you’re incredibly lucky or have the weight of a massive record company behind you the chances of getting heard are somewhere very, very close to zero. Yes, you could throw a ton of money at it, advertise all over the place and maybe, just maybe strike it lucky and get a few million plays. But even then it’s highly unlikely you’ll cover your costs.
Let’s face it we’re deluding ourselves if we think we release music to become rich and famous.
So why bother? Well, I can’t speak for every songwriter or musician out there but I would wager that most of us do it because it’s a passion, it’s something we’re almost driven to do. But having released our music we would very much like it to be heard by as many people as possible.
I’ve spent a lot of time and effort building up my social media presence. I have nearly 5,000 Facebook followers, over 1,600 LinkedIn connections, nearly 1,300 Twitter followers and over 1,400 Instagram followers. OK so I’m not a Kardashian, I’m not an influencer with millions hanging on my every post but these are real people who have taken time to actively engage with me on some level, however tenuous.
I can’t produce enough music to engage these people every minute of every day but there’s absolutely tons of brilliant music out there just desperate for an audience so why not introduce my little audience to that music? It doesn’t cost me anything, well only a little time, and it gives me a nice warm glow when I get a bit of positive feedback from either the musician or the follower and in the words of John Lennon:
“Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world”So, pop over to my Clip Bait playlist on Spotify and listen to some great music from musicians you’ve almost certainly never heard of. Who knows, you might really enjoy it.
If you’re an artist or band who write original songs then Contact Me with your website address and a link to your Spotify page. If I like your music I’ll include it within Clip Bait. No strings attached, no cost and certainly no promise that Clip Bait will make you an international superstar.
