At the last Songwriter Evening, the audience was treated to the thoughtful, atmospheric sound of Violet Cry, a Cheshire-based duo bringing original, soulful and melodic music to the stage.
Violet Cry are Diane Wye and Ian Wilson. Diane’s background in dance, theatre and music gives her songwriting a strong sense of performance and emotional storytelling, while Ian’s guitar, keyboard work and arrangements create the soundscapes that sit behind the words. Together, they offer music that feels intimate, reflective and carefully crafted — the kind of original songwriting Songwriter Evening exists to celebrate.
Their songs explore deeply human themes, including estrangement, relationship breakdown and the important moments that shape our lives. Tracks such as “The Lion’s Cry”, “Love Has Lost Its Way” and “Havant” highlight their emotional range and the duo’s ability to turn personal themes into memorable, moving songs.
The duo have recently released their debut album, All Between Walls, giving listeners the chance to explore Violet Cry’s songwriting beyond the live setting. Their online performances, including songs such as “Havant”, “See Me Through” and “Water Ripples”, also offer a stripped-back look at the duo’s sound and chemistry.
Violet Cry are exactly the kind of act that makes Songwriter Evening special: original songs, performed by the people who wrote them, in a room built for listening. Songwriter Evening is not about background music or covers; it is about giving songwriters the space, sound and audience their work deserves.
You can find Violet Cry in the Songwriter Evening Showcase, alongside other artists who have shared their original music at previous evenings. Come along to a future Songwriter Evening and discover more songwriters at the source — live and original.
