Some songs come from joy. Some come from memory. Some come from the places we would rather not go back to, but somehow still need to understand.

The Ties That Bound Us Close is one of those songs.

It tells the story of a bitter and drawn-out break-up, but it is really about something even harder to explain: why people stay in toxic relationships long after they know they should leave. Why the familiar can feel safer than the unknown. Why love, habit, guilt, hope and fear can become so tangled that walking away feels almost impossible.

The song has become one of my most streamed tracks on Spotify, which means a great deal to me. I think part of the reason it has connected with people is that most of us have either lived through something like this or watched someone we care about go through it. Relationships can bind people together in ways that are not always healthy, and sometimes the hardest thing is admitting that the ties which once felt close have become something else entirely.

I wrote and composed The Ties That Bound Us Close, and all voices and instruments on the track are mine. It was produced and mastered by Jermaine Nelson-Williams at Jay Reigns Music.

If you have already listened to the song, thank you. Every play genuinely matters. If you have not heard it yet, I would love you to give it a listen and see whether the story connects with you.
