It was a huge pleasure to see Dea Matrona in concert in Liverpool last night. I saw them last year in Leeds and what a difference a year makes. From the very first note it was clear they have come on in leaps and bounds. They were good last year, in fact very good. Last night they were superb. Dea Matrona are a seriously good band and if there’s any justice in the world they’re going to be huge.
I first became aware of Molly and Orlaith a few years ago when they started posting YouTube videos of themselves busking in Belfast playing classic rock songs. It was clear then that here were two very talented, and confident, musicians. By the time I saw them in Leeds they had written and recorded an album of their own songs and were starting to really go for it. Last night showed conclusively that all the hard work they’ve put in is really paying off.
Their musicianship was never in doubt, but they’ve proved they can write really good songs and now they can deliver a storming show. It’s a hugely powerful package. All power to them, I sincerely hope that they go on to have massive success and I can’t wait to hear their new music and to see them live again.
